What was the issue raised about flaming? That there was one was mentioned briefly in the opening but never elaborated on.

What was the issue raised about flaming? That there was one was mentioned briefly in the opening but never elaborated on. One of the FF crit's results in a fuel tank igniting. Since it's past the motor and interior to the plane, side slipping makes little if any sense. So, the debate was whether or not it was necessary to slideslip when the fire was not able to be affected by said side slip (and the discussion was compounded by the 7th ed rule set which seemed to indicate than only engine fires were required to sideslip). Sorry, said sideslip, meant falling leaf. My bad.

Hey Al, never heard back from you on this...care to chip in? Should a plane with a flaming fuel leak still be required to falling leaf even though such a maneuver is unlikely to keep the flames from spreading quickly because the fire is mostly containing internal to the cockpit/fuselage?

I just got around to looking up the rules and crit charts and figuring out what happened. I'll post my answer in the 8th Edition topic since it's relevant there.

One comment - Nothing in the "Secret Envelope" overrode any standard rules. I just copied in the standard 8th Ed stats, bomb loads, loaded penalties, and 2-seater experienced crew benes for ease of reference. Every 25+ mission observer (and 37+ mission pilot) gets 1-3 to hit on probable pilot hits.
Why would Rick take a pilot to put in the observer's seat? You can't do that! If any of us took a pilot from our roster and put him in an observer's seat he'd count as 0/0, wouldn't he? (I'm asking, not stating here.) It seems odd to me since Oblt. Fillisch was a 38/0 observer who could have been taken.
I'll put up another post later with some more background on the S.E.

I then asked Stephen if that probable only worked on pilots, and he said he wasn't sure either. So, we opted to stay with the 1-2 only (which if I'd bothered to read ALL the rules I would have seen the 3 was a hit - and I would not have shifted down a column on the HO shots I gave Stephen and Kevin). All in all, badly played by me, and I tend to let my generous side come out more often than not when a pilot life is at stake.

Also, do I now keep these 2 guys on my roster as 1/0, or was this one of Al's real crews, or were these just throwaways for this mission?

Didn't know you shifted down on that turn. So, did you find out that pilot hits can occur for normal ability observers on a 1-3 roll? I looked it up at the time and couldn't find anything, but that doesn't mean its not there.
