Here's my 2 cents... we have a system in Indy that has worked for almost twenty years and its worth considering. Pick up games and officially scheduled VDP events are two different things. One answer will not work for them both, so let's discuss them separately. For pick up games, we can use the current ISD calendar. When you want to play, simply post your entry in the calendar and say "looking for games" or "VDP players wanted for 8pm game" or whatever. Sometimes it will draw enough players, sometimes it will not. I can post instructions for this as the "generally accepted" way to announce pick up games on the VDP page so those who want to try and schedule their own pick up games can give it their best shot. For officially scheduled games, including VDP's yet to be named big events, they should be put both on the calendar and on the VDP page permanently and released a year in advance. For instance, games could be held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Or weekly on Sundays at noon, or whatever. See this page for an example: www.sopwithmotorsports.com/indysquadron/id212.html VDP will need an element of certainty to survive... it will need times and dates that people can count on with some structure and organization. If a pick up game falls through, no one will be angry and quit playing. But if we're going to promote VDP, people will expect something firm. We should respond to that and offer something firm by scheduling regular games at consistent times. If this is desirable to everyone I can do a short article explaining it and post it on the VDP page. If not I'm open to better ideas and will help in any way I can.

The only problem with that I can see is that (for me anyway) I can play pretty much any night. Not that I can every night, but if once a week (in addition to the regularly scheduled game) somebody were to say "Let's play" I can usually do so given enough advance notice. I don't want to fill up the calendar by saying I'm available practically every night though. I just think pickup games should be organized away from the forum and then only posted once it's definite they're going to happen. Plus, if I post that I'm available every night, that still doesn't mean I'd know if I'm supposed to show up and play or not. Only posting definite games would allow everyone to know when they need to show up.

Here is the system that worked for me. Pick a date about a week in advance. Post a topic on the forum announcing the date and time and any other info. (Such as rule set and vassal info.) Email every email address for DP players you can find. Post links to your forum post anywhere else you can think of. (ie: DP yahoo group, BBG Dawn patrol forums.) When 4 people respond saying they will be there, you have a game.
Now since I am also in the group that can play almost anytime with notice, all we need to do is Identify a day where the most people who are not flexible can play. Then we declare that the "Weekly VDP day" and start putting the word out.
To this end, I have started a poll in this forum. Those people who are not flexible, please vote for the day you are most available and please post a reply to the poll as well telling us the times on that day. That way we can find the day that will allow the most people who are not so flexible to play in a weekly game.

The only thing I'd add to your first paragraph is once you've got a definite foursome, add the game to the calendar.
The only problem I can see with posting when we're available to play (as opposed to firm game dates) on the calendar is that anybody looking at it still won't know if there's a game that night or not.

I now will not be available for a game Thursday. If anyone wants to play on the weekend, I should be available both Sat and Sun mornings.

Cool. Little by little we'll get this going. I posted a message over at The Aerodrome forum inviting folks to join us so hopefully that may attract a player or two as well.

If Sunday doesn't work for anyone, Saturday is an alternate date.

If we have four I could try to make it. I might be a few minutes late.
