At the Mini-con Mr. Carr again expounded that he had re-established contact with Jim Pink who has promised to have the charts available in 30 days.
So to paraphrase, the check is in the mail.

But there is a difference between releasing a bunch of charts in a random fashion and being able to buy a box with all the "8th ed" stuff in it. So while it will be neat to see new charts, I'm not sure we'll ever see an "8th ed" in the manner most of us seem to expect.

It is essentially to be an organized download with complete rules, etc. For current DP players this will be a good thing and a step forward. But as far as marketing the game goes, it sure won't draw any new players. At this point I don't think our dream of a new boxed game on store shelves will happen. And that means, IMHO, that the game will not outlive this generation of players.

Yup. And we've got several young, new players as well. However, individual training can never replace mass marketing. It will dwindle on in it's death throes until it finally expires and becomes the answer to a trivia question.
The game needs to be put in a box on store shelves in order to secure its future.

I see what you mean I just disagree. In a world of Publish or Perish DP has perished. And it would be cool if DP could attain the status of Magic but even if nothing else is ever published I still see it being played by a younger crowd.
The main difference in our outlooks is how we choose to play. When we founded the Apache Jagdstaffel out of the remains of the last two Aerodromes we made a commitmant not to play around a dining table. We play at a game club and have invested signifigant cash in designing a table just for DP. We get alot of looks as people are waiting to play some other game. We finally talk them into playing a game and we seem to hook about 1 out of every 5.
We may have cut back to playing just two days a week but our nights very from 2 to 14 depending on who shows up. Like I mentioned 4 new guys just last night.
You may be on your last legs in Indiana but don't judge the rest of us by that.

There are not enough gaming club tables in the world to match the marketing power of a national release of a boxed game on Wal Mart shelves.

I doubt that DP will ever hit a walmart shelf whether a boxed edition is published or not

It certainly won't without one.
In the late 80's the 7th edition boxed game was in major department stores including Lazarus/Macy's.
The point remains... without major marketing of some sort, DP will continue to be played in small cell groups with a cult following; nothing more.

And the competition from other formats like Aerodrome and Wings of War (which ARE available as boxes) is going to eventually erode the pool of new players with 'whiz-bang' look and such. Go watch one of them at Origins or GenCon...there are always new players that are looking for the game as opposed to the same players keeping the tradition. I'm afraid Stephen has a valid point - without something to market you can put into the hands of players, any recruitment will be sporadic and the game will not prosper or fend off competition.
