Last night on 1/19/2010 I introduced Randy, Danny and Vickie to Dawn patrol.
Understandably, I went a little easy on them, four balloons with only one MG protection.
Randy and Danny were in Camels (130) and myself and Vickie were flying Pfalz DIIIs. The Camels were tasked with shooting down at least one balloon, and the two Pfalz were to protect them. so on the first turn went Randy, my self, Vickie then Danny. Randy went after a balloon, but me and Vickie were powerless to stop him because we started at 300' and they, at 800'. So me and Vickie scramble to get over to the balloon, and Danny going last decides to attack Vickie. The balloon Randy attacked deflated to the ground, giving him his first kill.
On the second turn Randy and Danny both lost numbers and decided to go after the same balloon which, exploded of course. Me and Vickie were able to get shots off this time, me at Randy and Vickie at Danny.
Third turn, two balloons are down, and again Randy and Danny lose numbers, but this time they peel off and each attack one balloon, me and Vickie decide to let the ground fire work it's magic. Danny's balloon does not go down and he takes a H.O. from an MG, which thankfully misses. Randy, however is not so lucky. His balloon does not go down and th MG ends up smoking him, engine crit 1/6.
On the fourth turn, Randy continues his attack on his balloon which, this time, goes up in flames. Danny however turns to attack Vickie, and guess what? Vickie takes engine crit 1/6 and gets smoked.(Wes walks past and says, "Jeez, everyone's smoking). and things are looking up for the Allies.
But on the fifth turn the tides turn. Danny loses numbers so decides to go after the last balloon again (which goes up in flames), and in doing so gives me and Vickie great shots on him. Randy's pilot hurries to the aid of his wing mate, but alas, he is to late. Vickie and I drench him in a rain of lead, and Vickie, so much like he father, rolls the magic "snake eyes" for a pilot hit.(Luckily for Danny, it was a light wound).
After that the Allies (being in such superior planes) limp home, and the Germans are forced to look at the damage they did.
We had a blast!! And Randy and Danny loved it! Though I probably made it to easy, because Randy's pilot, Lt. John Lon, went home to a hero's welcome a triple kill, after winning the cut against Danny, (whose pilot, Lt. Peter Lon [They're twin brothers!], got one kill.) and, with Dad's, Angie's and Wesley's
approval, was awarded th D.F.C.
Vickie's second mission pilot, Lt. Kate Neudorff, was awarded (with my house rule) the Iron Cross 2nd Class. And me, well I got the satisfaction of seeing their smiles.
