Great interview, Rex. I'm sure there are lots of gamers who have their game gathering dust on a shelf, hopefully some of them see this article.

It's too bad there wasn't time to go into the history of the VDP module itself. I was conversing with George Long via e-mail lo those many years ago about a WWI aviation game he was developing. I mentioned Dawn Patrol and the webgames that were taking place at the time and he asked if I thought a VASSAL module for DP might be a good idea. He didn't really know anything about DP itself when he created the module as he had never played the game, but he created it as a stepping stone so he could learn more about module creation. In fact, I think the sum of George's DP experience ended up being one turn of one game. He had developed the module and three of us got together for a demo game. We had hoped for a fourth to make the game official, but there were far fewer interested people at the time. On the first turn I got a lucky 400' shot on George that caused something like one or two side hits. One of those was an engine hit and he ended up rolling a crit that stopped his engine and put him into a glide. It's just ironic the sum total of DP experience for the guy that developed the VDP module is one turn of one game. After that one game a few of us got together a few more times, but we had trouble getting four players so it eventually died. I then tried to resurrect it again a couple years later but was unsuccessful. Then one day about six months ago I perused the Indy Squadron site and noticed some people trying to rekindle it once again so I jumped on the bandwagon. What's the old saying; "Third time's the charm"? With VDP that may be the case.

Nice interview and thanks for the props for ISD. Boy... if we could just get an 8th ed. out there, think how many interviews like this could be done to promote and get more players in the game. Boggles the mind.
