I see at the VASSAL website that the only DP module available appears to be the initial module George created. He created a second version that we used for a few games a while back and I'm wondering which one people here have been using.
If I remember rightly, people were having memory issues with their computers using the standard mapboard in version 1 so for version 2 he used a simple light blue map that didn't eat as much memory and made gameplay a tad easier - if slightly less colorful.

The version on the Vassal site is the only one that I've ever seen. I've never had any memory problems with it, or heard of anyone else having problems.
I may be starting to run into what may be memory issues with the new module, but it may also be due to the number of graphic files I have open in other applications as I work. If I do find problems, I have a couple of possible solutions in mind.

If I remember rightly, another thing George did with V2 was add ID's to the options for each counter. That way everyone was able to use the same counters if need be but we were still able to tell who's plane was who's.
I'm just wondering what I should do with V2 of the module. If everybody's using the first one and it works alright maybe we should just continue to use that one.

We need new game boards and more counters if that's possible. The system itself works just fine for me.

Kevan and I are working on counters now, its a slow process but I believe he has quite a few loaded already!

Is a new board out of the question for the time being? Cause I have an idea...
I've got a photo of a classic board that was used at Indy for fifteen years before it was finally destroyed. It would be way cool to take the photo of that board and make it into a new map for VDP. Its a good board and would bring back some great memories. Is that even possible?

It is possible. However, Images as boards can become prohibitively large as far as file size. It is suggested that boards be reproduced using a drawing program where the the color depth and resolution can be controlled to keep the size small. Also, maps could be released as an extension to the original module, this would allow a large map to be downloaded on its own and then added to the module for play. If you can send me the photo of the map I'll take a look at it.

Okay... PM me your email address pls.
Then we can progress to downloading either actual maps of France, or better yet, Google Earth aerial photos.
Now THAT would be impressive!

Why limit us to just Earth? I hear the dogfighting on Mars (Der Rote Kampfplanet) was extremely brutal from 1917-1918.

That sounds like something fit for Rick's Alternate Universe Dawn Patrol.

I've given some thought to new maps, and after doing some reading on the Vassal site, I agree with Rex. Google Map images would likely place huge demands on memory, especially at any resolution that would look any good. I would recommend developing new maps from scratch, using a limited palette of colours and with a level of detail similar to the original DP map.
I would be glad to help out on a map project after I get through the bulk of the plane counters. Two ideas that would really interest me would be creating maps that depict an aerodrome or the Front.

In my perfect VDP world we'd have a number of different maps available and would be able to choose which one we want to use prior to each game. I'd think a plain light blue map could be used for fighter vs. fighter games where ground terrain isn't pertinent to the game. For others we could have one with targets (cities, aerodromes, etc.) for bombing missions, one with trenches, another with ocean for encounters with ships, hilly terrain for Italian vs. Austro-Hungarian contests, etc.
