Wow. My prayers go out to all the families/loved ones of those who were killed.
My first question is though, how many fewer would be dead if there were people there that were carrying? I think that there will be a firestorm of gun control hysterica because of this, but (if looked at realistically), a couple of students that were themselves in possession of firearms and were trained in their use could have drastically reduced the total number of victims.
Probably won't be a popular viewpoint but it seems to me that may events may have played out differently in that case.

I believe its a state university where weapons are not allowed on campus.
Astute observers will notice that these things ALWAYS occur in gun control zones, NEVER in free zones. To wit:
When is the last time a bunch of people were shot in -
1) A gun shop 2) An NRA meeting 3) The Smith and Wesson factory
But when is the last time someone shot a bunch of people in a -
1) School 2) College 3) Post office
Even looneys who go on shooting sprees are smart enough to know where the hunting is good. They seek out gun control areas because they know they cannot succeed in free areas. Criminals truly prefer unarmed victims.

interesting topic, up here in canada, we have way tighter gun controls in place the you all in the states....so...
it was interesting to note (even up here in the news), that the disussion of gun control, came up before the dust had settled in virginia.
I think you are absolutely correct that this will degenerate into gun control issues. But it is my understanding that the guns used were actually bought legally...and therefore even if gun control was in place, it would not have mattered (perhaps the type of gun might have changed).
what gets me also, is the 20/20 hindsight, where you have everyone saying this guy was a loner, exact profile of the columbine shooters, etc etc etc...as if they could predict this type of behavour....or saw it coming...if only someone would have done something about it earlier....
Not only will you see the gun control issue raised, but what about extra pyscological screening of students...where will it end...

Sadly, the control addicts will seize upon this and parade these poor victims like a float in the Rose Bowl Parade til kingdom come.
The fact is that barely a month before, the Virginia legislature defeated a proposal that would have allowed law abiding gun owners to carry guns and protect themselves and their loved ones while on a college campus.
If this law had passed, these people could have defended themselves. The state legislators who defeated this proposal should stand trial as accomplices to mass murder. They did everything necessary to make this happen except pull the trigger.
Criminals prefer unarmed victims.

I can't agree with Stephen more. As I sat in a hospital yesterday ,waiting for my grandson's tonsil removal, I saw a 6" x 8" sign on the sliding entry door. It showed a sihoutte pistol with the circle and a line through it in red. "this hospital is a weapons free zone" it said. Which means absolutly nothing to an insane person packing a 9mm walking through that door.

There was a good article written by Ted Nugent (Gee, I wonder which side of this issue he's on) over at CNN. I agree with him. All taking away guns does is take them away from the sane, regular people. A psycho will always find a way to get his hands on something to make him feel superior to the people he's murdering. If it wasn't guns he would have bought some fertilizer and made a bomb. When Timothy McVeigh blew up the Federal Center in Oklahoma City I don't remember people marching to ban fertilizer. Ted also references some situations where numerous lives were possibly saved when an armed civilian took action and stopped a shooter.

PLEEEEEZE give me a break. Here's what we are expected to believe over the VT shootings: If we are to believe the emerging timeline of events, Cho Seung-Hui killed a woman and her RA in a dorm, went back to his dorm and captured a QuickTime video rant, burned a DVD, trekked to the post office with two 9mm weapons in tow, mailed the DVD, along with photos and miscellaneous writings to NBC, and then marched over to Norris Hall and killed another thirty or so people execution-style. Something is fishy here. If someone had put that in a movie it would have been classified as science fiction... www.informationliberation.com/?id=21571
