I read the rules for how to do a Split-S during tailing, but they're not very clear at all. I move my one square then turn into any direction I like, but then that's where I get stumped. For my initial move during tailing do I just stay in that initial movement square? Do I dive during the maneuver (counting each 100' of dive as one square of movement) and then dive again when I finish out? The way it's written is just very confusing.

Hey Kirk A split S is the same overall as a tailspin. You move one space forward and face yourself in any direction you wish. You dive a minimum of 400' but you stay in that square. Your opponent moves and then you finish. You do not get to count the dive you perform in this manuever towards your speed. (ie it does not give you an extra square of movement for every 100' dive)
Hope this helps.

Ok so in other words, if I say I'm diving my maximum in that first square, my move for that turn is over, or do I still get my normal movement (minus the 1 square moved) because all the squares I'm assumed to have moved initially were dive bonus squares?

Since you have moved one square, you have used 1 pt of movement, and since you are also diving 400 ft in that square you burn up 4 more points of movement, thus 5 pts for that square.

If your turn speed was eight and you performed a split s and dove 1500 feet in the first square, you would have seven movement left to use. If your turn speed was eight and you performed a split s and dove 400 feet in the first square, you would have seven movement left to use and potentially 11 more in dive. (Assuming a 1500 ft dive)

Got it. Thanks for the help. DP is just like real life in that us rookie pilots have to limit ourselves to simple maneuvers because it takes us a while to figure out how to execute the harder ones.

If you fly early war missions where the turn speeds are alot slower you will be surprised at how much you learn.
