Tippedtop - Don't feel bad. I feel the same way. IMHO head-ons should be a very low percentage shot (due to closure rates) and should not be an attractive alternative. Also, the experience level of the pilots in question "My guys a 10/4 and your guys a 0/0 so I can do it" shouldn't enter into the equation. People that enter a game using a rookie pilot who's sole purpose is to use a HO to shoot down a veteran pilot have lost the spirit of the game. IMHO the rules should be rewritten so that head-ons are far less attractive. There should be a +2 modifier to the "to hit" roll to reflect the small amount of time any pilot has to get off a HO shot and the hit table itself should be rewritten eto be more realistic.
Wanna regain your love of the game? Try playing VDP with us on Thursday nights. Only one HO has ever been attempted.
Personally I wonder why the game was designed such that HO's were made so lethal yet in the rules we're told they're "atrocities" that are to be avoided. Don't give a player a tool to win the game and then tell him it's bad sportsmanship to use that tool. Either eliminate the whole "atrocities" angle so that we all spend every game lining up HO's or make the shot what it was in real life, a low percentage shot that was to be avoided.
