Bloody April Continues!!!!!
Our on-line game last Saturday was so much fun we are going to do it again right away. Myself, Stephen and Stephen Dale are already committed, so we are looking for anyone else who might be interested in joining us on Vassal for a game. We would like to build up enough interest to make this a regular event. I guarantee that once you try it, you will be hooked.
So post here if you’re interested. Even if you can’t make it this time, just let us know you’re out there and we will try to keep scheduling games until you do get a chance.
Ok now down to business, here are the specifics for the game this Sunday.
Time
9am PDT / 12pm EDT / 5pm BST
PDT =Pacific Daylight time GMT-7
EDT =Eastern Daylight time GMT-4
BST British Summer time GMT+1
wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/timezone-summer.htm
www.timezonecheck.com/
Game Format
Rules: all of the original rules from the 1980 boxed set, and no house rules.
Damage: all damage will be rolled openly using the online dice by the player doing the shooting
Tailing cards: white tailing cards will be used
Mission: Mission particulars will be rolled on the day depending on number of players
Time Zone: Know your time zone and how far behind or in front of GMT you are
What you need:
Your rule books and charts
Pencil / sharpener / rubber
Pilot/aircraft log sheet
Latest versions of Java and Vassal installed with the Dawn Patrol module
***Optional***
Headset and free voice communication software. (Team Speak or Skype)
Voice communication makes the game run very smoothly. I would like to see everyone who plays have this capability. Headsets are very inexpensive and the software is free. This is still optional since not everyone has a headset, but this should be mandatory for anyone who is serious about playing DP online.
How to install and set up and connect to the vassal server.
1.Make sure you have Java installed on you computer. If you do not, you can download it at: www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
2. Download the Dawn patrol Module here: www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php?option=vassal_modules&task=downloadFile&file_id=116
3.Extract the module and the documentation from the zip file. (using winzip or the unzipping tool of your choice. Pay attention to the location that the files are saved.)
4.go to www.vassalengine.org/community/index.php and Use the Quick Launch link in the left column to Launch vassal. (In the dialog box select “Open with” and us the Java Web start launcher.(default)) or use this link: www.vassalengine.org/ws/vassal.jnlp . While Vassal is loading you will have the option to create a desktop icon which you can use in the future to launch the game. **note the quick launch automatically updates so you always have the most current version of vassal.
5.Once it loads select jump right in. And then press the “Play Module” button. This will bring up an open file Dialog box. Choose the Dawnpatrol.mod (that you extracted in step 3) and open it.
6.This will open several windows. In the Dawn Patrol controls window there is a button with 2 arrows pointing left and right. Press this button and it will bring up the Server control window. In the server control window there is another button just like it that will connect you to the vassal server. Once connected to the server you will be able to navigate the different Dawn patrol games that are available at the time.
What to do on the day
Have everything ready
Launch vassal selecting the Dawn patrol module.
Don't load the map
Go on line by using the “connect” button in the server control window..
This should put you in the Dawn Patrol “Main Room” , From there you will be able to navigate to the Indy Squadron room.
Once every one is in and ready I will load the map and then every one right clicks on my name and selects synchronize to enter the game.
